Facing Eviction? Here are some things to know:

If you don’t have a court ordered Warrant of Eviction, stay in your home. Eviction is a long legal process, and even if your landlord is threatening to evict you, they must take you to court and secure an eviction warrant. This process can take months.

If you have received a court summons for eviction, call Law NY at (607) 273-3667. Their representation is limited, but they can represent you if you are being brought to court and make below their income cutoff.

Additionally, the Tenants Legal Hotline (1.607.301.1560) can answer questions you have about your situation and provide brief legal advice.  The Tenants Legal Hotline is staffed by attorneys and Cornell Law students. It is a FREE resource available to Tompkins County residents at ALL income levels.

Finally, the Ithaca Tenants Union fully stands with any tenants at risk of eviction. Reach out at https://www.ithacatu.org/landlord-issue-form. We’re volunteer-based but will get back to you as soon as possible. While we can’t represent you in court, the union can help with understanding paperwork, getting to court, etc. Most importantly, we can provide solidarity from fellow tenants who are in similar situations. Landlords bank on tenants staying isolated from one another, and on tenants not knowing their rights. We have to stay connected to protect ourselves.
